Why Your Retirement Plan Holdings Show as "Unknown" or Have No Ticker
Last updated: August 21, 2026
Overview
Funds inside employer retirement plans — 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) and the TSP — often have no public ticker symbol, so Mezzi receives the position but can't identify what it holds and files it as unknown. Your account balance and net worth are still correct; only the breakdown is affected. Email help@mezzi.com with the fund names, expense ratios and any fund code or CUSIP from your plan statement, and we'll map each one to a comparable public security so allocation, Exposure X-Ray and dividend figures fill in.
⚠ What You May See
Match whichever of these describes your screen:
A holding labelled Unknown, or a fund row with a blank ticker column.
An internal plan code where a symbol should be — for example NESUSS, ATRUSS, ATRLCI, ATRLCS, AAHLVS.
A fund name that reads correctly ("U.S. Large Cap Stock Index Fund," "Allspring Total Return Bond") but contributes 0% to performance or allocation.
A large slice of your Exposure X-Ray sitting in Other, with your stock allocation looking lower than you know it to be.
TSP C, S, I, G or F fund balances present, but not classified as stocks or bonds.
Dividend figures reading $0 for an account you know pays distributions.
⚙ How to Fix It
1. Confirm the account total is right. If the balance matches your plan statement, only the classification is wrong. If the total is also off, start with Why Does My Account Balance in Mezzi Differ from What My Brokerage Shows? instead.
2. Email us the fund details. This is the step that actually resolves it. Send help@mezzi.com:
the account name as it appears in Mezzi, and the plan administrator
each fund's full name
the fund code or CUSIP, if your statement shows one
the expense ratio for each fund
a screenshot of the holdings screen in Mezzi
We use those details to map each fund to the closest public security. Support has typically applied mappings the same or next business day.
3. While you wait, describe the funds in AI Personalization. Mezzi's AI reads your personalization notes, so writing something like "My Empower 401(k) NESUSS is a Northern Trust S&P 500 index fund" lets AI answers reason about the position correctly even before the mapping is applied. See How to Update AI Personalization in the help center.
4. Don't delete and re-add the account. Reconnecting doesn't create a ticker that doesn't exist, and you lose the account's history in Mezzi.
Proxies we recommend
When a plan fund has no public symbol, we substitute a liquid, low-cost public fund with the same exposure. These are the some of defaults support reaches for:
Fund type in your plan | Proxy we use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Large-cap index (S&P 500) | VOO | Preferred over SPY |
Large-cap blend | VV | Broader than a pure S&P 500 sleeve |
Core / total return bond | AGG | BND is equally acceptable |
💡 Why This Happens
Most employer plans don't hold retail mutual funds. They hold collective investment trusts and proprietary share classes created for that single plan. Those instruments are real and correctly valued by your administrator, but they have no public ticker and no public pricing feed, so the market-data providers Mezzi relies on return nothing for them — no sector breakdown, no underlying holdings, no dividend history.
That's why the position arrives with a balance but no identity. The value is right because it comes from your plan; the classification is missing because there's nothing public to look it up against. As support put it to one customer: "The positions in your Empower 401(k) aren't coming through with enough detail for us to map them directly, so we're using close market proxies instead."
Target-date funds inside employer plans hit the same wall and tend to land in Other in Exposure X-Ray, which understates your true stock allocation until the fund is mapped.
Important Notes
A proxy is an approximation, not your actual fund. Sector weights, expense ratios and dividend yields will track the proxy, not the plan fund — close for an index sleeve, less exact for an actively managed one. Your balance always reflects the real position.
Once a mapping is applied, allocation, Exposure X-Ray and dividend figures update on the next data refresh, usually within a day. Past performance days aren't rewritten.
We're building automatic proxy generation, but it hasn't shipped. Until it does, mapping is a manual request.

Common Questions
Is my net worth wrong because of this? No. The dollar value of the holding is correct and counts fully toward your net worth. What's missing is what the fund is made of.
Why can't Mezzi just look up the fund? Collective investment trusts and plan-only share classes aren't listed publicly, so there's no market data feed to look them up in. This is a limit of what exists, not a gap in one provider.
Will a proxy change my performance numbers? No. Performance is measured on the actual balance your plan reports. The proxy only supplies classification, sector exposure and dividend characteristics.
Can I choose the proxy myself? Tell us your preference in the email and we'll use it if the exposure genuinely matches. Otherwise we use the defaults above.
My TSP funds aren't showing correctly — is this the same thing? Partly. The TSP's C, S, I, G and F funds are government trusts with no public tickers, so they need mapping. Separately, the TSP doesn't hold a reliable connection with third-party apps at all — see the connection troubleshooting article.
