Why Do My 401(k) Funds Show $0.00 Daily Change or No Returns?
Last updated: October 29, 2026
Overview
A 401(k) fund shows $0.00 daily change and no returns when Mezzi can't match it to a public fund that has a daily price. Your account balance is usually still correct. You can fix the fund yourself by asking Advisor in chat to set a proxy, a comparable public fund that stands in for it. If you'd rather have our team do it, email help@mezzi.com with the fund names and any fund codes from your plan.
⚠ What You May See
$0.00 daily change and a +0.00% one-year return on some funds, while the account total matches your plan
"We couldn't load a price chart for this asset right now" when you tap a holding
A stock allocation that looks lower than it should be, because funds Mezzi can't identify aren't counted as stocks
A target-date fund listed under Other assets
A money market fund counted as bonds instead of Cash
A fund listed under Remaining funds (see Why do some of my funds show as "Remaining funds" in Exposure X-ray?)
⚙ How to Fix It
Compare the account total in Mezzi with your plan's website. If the total matches, the connection is fine and only the fund details need work.
Write down each fund that shows $0.00 daily change, using the full name and any code your plan shows. Plan funds often have internal codes instead of ticker symbols.
Open Advisor and ask "Which of my holdings need proxies?" Then ask Mezzi to set one, for example "Set VUG as the proxy for Large Cap Growth Trust." Mezzi shows a review card, and nothing is saved until you confirm it. For the full iOS and web steps, see How to Set a Proxy for a Holding Using AI Chat in Mezzi.
Check what the proxy will be used for, then select Save. Allocation (the default) fixes your asset allocation and X-Ray, such as a fund under Other assets or Remaining funds, and leaves the holding's balance unchanged. It doesn't change the daily change or returns shown for the holding. Price or Price & allocation has Mezzi use the proxy's price movements for the holding, which also changes its value in Mezzi. We recommend Allocation unless the holding has no reliable price of its own.
If you'd rather have our team set it up, email help@mezzi.com with the account name as it appears in Mezzi, the list of funds, and what each one should be. For example, "Vanguard Institutional 500 Index: S&P 500 stock" or "Stable Value: cash." Our team matches each fund to a comparable public fund and tells you what was changed. Stable value funds and money market funds are classified as cash. Target-date funds are matched to the same public target-date fund, so they count as stocks and bonds.
💡 Why This Happens
Mezzi prices and breaks down funds using their public ticker symbols. Many employer-plan funds don't have one. They are collective investment trusts or plan-only share classes with internal codes, so there is nothing for Mezzi to price automatically. The balance still comes through from your plan, which is why the total is right while the daily change and returns are blank.
Important Notes
Returns will be close to your plan's, not identical. The public fund Mezzi matches to can have different fees than the plan version.
Manually added accounts: we can't apply a fund match to holdings in manually added accounts yet.
If your balance is several times higher than your plan shows, that's a different problem. Some plans hold a fund as units of a separate account, and each unit is worth only a fraction of a public share. Mezzi then prices your units at the full public share price. Email us your share or unit count and the balance from your plan, and we can correct the price for your account.
If the whole account shows as cash instead of a list of funds, see Why do my holdings show as cash instead of investments?
