What Happens to My Social Security Number When I Upload a Tax Return?
Last updated: September 30, 2026
Overview
Your Social Security number is never something Mezzi sets out to capture. When you upload a tax return, Mezzi skips SSNs, EINs, and other government ID numbers, and automatically masks any SSN-shaped number before anything is saved, so your SSN is not stored in your Mezzi profile in readable form.
📌 What You Need to Know
What Mezzi pulls from your tax return: only the financial figures needed to help with your portfolio, such as income totals, filing status, and tax amounts.
What Mezzi skips: the system that reads your tax return is explicitly instructed not to pull Social Security numbers, EINs, or other government ID numbers.
A second safeguard: before anything is saved, Mezzi automatically scans the extracted text and masks any value shaped like an SSN, replacing it with
XXX-XX-XXXX.
Important Notes
The automatic masking step described above applies to tax returns. Other document types you upload don't ask for government ID numbers.
