Troubleshooting Charles Schwab Connections
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Overview
Most Charles Schwab connection problems come down to one of three things: choosing the wrong Schwab entry in search, a sign-in window that wasn't completed, or a connection that needs repairing after Schwab expired it. Schwab connects through Plaid, and Schwab publishes more than one entry — Charles Schwab and Charles Schwab – Retirement Plan Center are separate logins covering different accounts. Start by confirming you used the entry matching the Schwab site you actually log in to.
⚠ What You May See
The connection ends without adding anything, sometimes after "the provided credentials were not correct".
Schwab connects, but an account you expected — often a workplace equity award or employee stock account — isn't there.
"Your account connection stopped syncing. Please repair the connection." on a Schwab account that was working.
Repeated sign-in prompts if you hold more than one Schwab login.
A generic failure with no useful detail, which usually means Schwab or the provider returned an internal error.
⚙ How to Fix It
Check which Schwab entry you used. If your account is a workplace retirement plan administered by Schwab, choose the Retirement Plan Center entry. If it's a retail brokerage or IRA, choose the standard Charles Schwab entry. Signing in to one with the other's credentials fails, and it fails looking like a password problem.
Complete the whole Schwab sign-in. Schwab will usually send a one-time code. Finish it and wait for the window to close on its own. Closing early ends the connection before the token is issued.
Select all the accounts Schwab offers. If Schwab asks which accounts to share, leave everything ticked. Accounts you skip won't appear in Mezzi and adding them later means going back through the connection.
Repair rather than reconnect. If Schwab already worked and then stopped, use the repair flow — How to Repair a Broken Account Connection. Deleting and re-adding creates a second Schwab record and loses history.
If a generic error repeats, wait and try later. A failure with no detail is generally a temporary fault at Schwab or the provider, and it usually clears within a day.
If you have two Schwab logins, connect them one at a time. Connecting both in one session has produced tangled credential sets and duplicate accounts for some customers. Connect one, let it finish syncing, then connect the other. If duplicates appear, How to Remove Duplicate Accounts in Mezzi covers cleanup.
💡 Why This Happens
Schwab is a large institution with several distinct sign-in surfaces, and each one is a separate integration on the provider's side. Most of what looks like a Schwab-specific bug is actually the wrong door — the right credentials at the wrong entry.
The rest is ordinary connection behaviour rather than anything unique to Schwab: tokens expire, security policies invalidate sessions, and providers occasionally return errors during an outage. Repair handles nearly all of it.
Two known gaps are worth naming honestly. Equity award and employee stock accounts don't reliably come through from Schwab — standard brokerage accounts connect fine while the equity compensation account is missing or incomplete. We've raised this with the provider and it isn't resolved. And fixed income positions at Schwab have shown classification and cost-basis errors in some accounts, which is a data-mapping problem rather than a connection one — if your bond holdings look wrong, send us the account name.
Important Notes
Missing accounts aren't always a failed connection. If Schwab connected and some accounts are present, the connection is healthy; the missing ones were either not selected during sign-in or sit behind a different Schwab entry.
Give a new Schwab connection up to 48 hours before judging holdings and transaction history as incomplete. See How Long Does It Take for My Accounts to Sync?.
Trades may not appear the same day. Schwab publishes position data on its own schedule, so a trade executed today typically lands on the next refresh cycle.

Common Questions
Which Schwab entry should I choose? The one matching the Schwab website you log in to. Workplace plans go through the Retirement Plan Center entry; retail brokerage and IRA accounts go through the standard Charles Schwab entry.
Why didn't my Schwab equity award account import? Equity award and employee stock accounts don't come through reliably from Schwab today. It's a known gap we've raised with our provider, and there isn't a workaround beyond adding the position manually.
Can I connect two Schwab logins? Yes. Connect them one at a time and let the first finish syncing, which reduces the chance of duplicate accounts.
My Schwab bond holdings show the wrong cost basis. Is that a connection problem? No. That's a data-mapping issue on our side rather than a broken connection. Email us the account name and the specific holding.
