How to Remove Duplicate Accounts in Mezzi

Last updated: July 18, 2026

Overview

If you encounter duplicate accounts after updating or reconnecting a financial institution in Mezzi, this is a common issue caused when the data aggregator treats the updated connection as a new institution link. There are two types of duplicate accounts you may see:

  1. Duplicates within a single brokerage, such as two IRA accounts inside Schwab.

  2. Duplicates of entire brokerage accounts, such as two separate Schwab accounts.

This guide explains how to efficiently remove duplicate accounts directly within Mezzi to keep your profile organized.

🧭 Steps to Remove a Duplicate Account

Follow these clear steps to delete duplicate accounts in Mezzi:

  1. Navigate to your Profile page.

  2. Select one of the duplicate accounts you wish to remove.

  3. Tap the 3 dots to access account options.

  4. Choose Delete account - for the account version you do not want to keep.

💡 Why This Happens

This usually happens when the flow creates a new connection instead of updating the existing connection.

When that happens:

  • the provider returns a new connection/item

  • the same real-world accounts come back with new IDs

  • Mezzi treats them as new accounts and inserts them again

  • the old connection may stay active, so both copies keep syncing

What we’ve seen in past issues

  • Most common case: the user taps Add account instead of repairing the existing connection.

  • Plaid-specific pattern: reconnecting the same institution can create a second Plaid item, which leads to duplicate accounts and sometimes repeated reconnect prompts.

  • Old connections often remain active: if the older connection is not automatically deactivated or deleted, both the old and new copies continue to appear.

  • Stale accounts can make this look worse: sometimes providers stop returning old accounts, but Mezzi keeps showing them until cleanup happens.

  • Past UI dedup logic also caused confusion: in some cases, display-side deduplication hid or merged accounts incorrectly, which made the issue harder to diagnose.

Root cause

The root cause is usually connection-level duplication, not bad account data from the institution itself.
