What to Do When Your Institution Isn't Listed
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Overview
If institution search returns "No institutions found. Try a different search term," the most common reason is that you searched for the wrong name — Mezzi lists the company that administers the account, which for workplace plans, 529s, and HSAs is usually not the employer, state, or brand you associate with it. Search the administrator's name from your statement first. If that also returns nothing, add the account manually; it still counts toward your net worth.
⚠ What You May See
"No institutions found. Try a different search term." after typing an institution name
Results that look close but none matching the site you actually log in at
Several similar entries with no obvious way to tell them apart
An institution that used to appear and no longer does
⚙ How to Fix It
Search the administrator, not the brand you think of. This resolves more of these than anything else.
Workplace retirement plans (401(k), 403(b), 457) — search the recordkeeper on your statement (Empower, Fidelity, Principal, TIAA, Transamerica, Voya), not your employer. Full detail in How to Connect Your Employer Retirement Account (401(k), 403(b), 457).
529 college savings plans — search the formal program name, then the program manager. See How to Connect a 529 College Savings Plan.
HSAs — search the HSA custodian (HealthEquity, Optum Bank, or the bank's health-accounts entity), not your health insurer or employer.
Try the name exactly as it appears on your login page. Use the wording on your statement or in the browser address bar. Drop suffixes like "Bank, N.A.," "Financial Group," or "Inc." and search the distinctive word on its own.
Try a shorter search term. Two or three characters of the distinctive word often surface entries that a full formal name misses.
If several entries appear, pick the one matching where you log in. You can't choose a data provider in Mezzi — the product shows one recommended path per institution — so the choice you're making is which entry, not which provider. Check the description or URL shown with each entry.
If nothing matches, add the account manually. Manual accounts are first-class in Mezzi: they count toward your net worth, appear in your accounts list, and can hold positions you enter yourself. Follow How to Manually Add an Account in Mezzi, and How to Edit Holdings for Manually Added Accounts in Mezzi if you want holdings on it.
Tell us which institution you wanted. We track requests and use them to prioritise coverage with our providers. Email help@mezzi.com with the name and the login URL.
💡 Why This Happens
Mezzi connects accounts through four providers, and the searchable list is the union of what those providers cover. Providers index the institution that holds and reports the account. That's why an employer plan appears under its recordkeeper and a state 529 appears under its program name — the employer or the state never appears at all, because they don't hold the data.
Coverage also changes. Providers add institutions, and occasionally an integration is withdrawn — sometimes because it broke and needs rebuilding at the provider's end. An institution that connected last year and isn't in search today has usually been pulled for a rebuild rather than removed permanently. We don't have a date to promise in those cases, and manual entry is the practical answer meanwhile.
Important Notes
A manual account is not a downgrade for net worth purposes. It's included in your totals like any connected account. What you lose is automatic updating: you refresh the balance yourself when you check your statement.
Some institutions genuinely can't be connected. The Thrift Savings Plan is the clearest example — it doesn't support a reliable connection with third-party apps, and adding it manually is the recommendation rather than a workaround.

the exact search terms you tried
the account type (brokerage, IRA, 401(k), HSA, 529, checking)
a screenshot of the search screen showing the empty result
Common Questions
Why can't I find my employer's 401(k)? Because Mezzi lists plan administrators, not employers. Search the recordkeeper named on your statement instead.
Can I request that Mezzi add my institution? Yes. Email help@mezzi.com with the name and login URL. We pass requests to our connection providers, though we can't commit to a timeline.
Will a manually added account still count toward my net worth? Yes. It's included in your totals and appears in your accounts list. You update the balance yourself.
My institution used to be listed and now isn't. What happened? An integration was most likely withdrawn for a rebuild at the provider's end. Add the account manually and let us know — we'll tell you if it comes back.
