Why Do I Keep Seeing "Repair" on the Same Account?

Last updated: August 20, 2026

Overview

If you complete the repair, see a confirmation, and then get "Your account connection stopped syncing. Please repair the connection." again on the same account, the repair is working — the institution is dropping the connection again shortly afterwards. This is almost always an upstream limitation at the institution or the data provider, not something you can fix by repairing more times. For a few institutions, most notably the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), there is no fix available today and the reliable option is to track the account manually.

What You May See

  • You finish the repair and see a success confirmation — one customer described being told "you are good to go" — and the repair prompt returns within minutes or hours.

  • "Your account connection stopped syncing. Please repair the connection." on the same account, repeatedly, over days.

  • "Account connection issue" reappearing on Home after you cleared it.

  • Balances frozen at the value from the last successful sync.

  • Repeated sign-in prompts from the institution, sometimes several within the same week.

How to Fix It

  1. Repair it once, properly, and stop there. Work through How to Repair a Broken Account Connection once, completing every step of the institution's sign-in including any texted or emailed code. If that holds, you're done. Repairing a third or fourth time doesn't improve the odds.

  2. Check whether it's your institution. Some institutions cannot currently hold a stable third-party connection. TSP is the clearest case. As support puts it: "Thrift Savings Plan does not currently support a reliable connection with third-party apps like Mezzi. This is why the account keeps requiring re-authentication and stops updating." Ally Bank has also produced a repeating repair loop for some customers.

  3. Tell us the institution name before you try anything else. Email help@mezzi.com. Mezzi connects through four providers — Plaid, Finicity, SnapTrade and Meld — and for some institutions we can route your connection through a different one. You can't change the route yourself, so this is a support step, not a self-serve one.

  4. If the institution can't hold a connection, add it manually. A manually added account still counts toward your net worth, allocation and Exposure X-Ray. It won't update on its own, so plan on editing the balance when you check in. The published articles How to Manually Add an Account and How to Edit Holdings for Manually Added Accounts walk through both steps.

  5. Don't delete and re-add repeatedly. Reconnecting an institution that can't hold a connection produces the same loop plus a duplicate account record. If you've already done this, we can clean the duplicates up.

💡 Why This Happens

The repair flow does exactly what it should: you authenticate, the institution issues a fresh token, Mezzi stores it, and the connection reads as healthy. The loop happens when the institution invalidates that token again almost immediately.

Two mechanics account for most cases. Some plan administrators require a multi-factor method that the data providers can't automate — TSP connection attempts through Plaid return MFA_NOT_SUPPORTED, with the message "this account requires a MFA type that we do not currently support for the institution." A token that can only be minted with a human present expires and can't be renewed in the background. Separately, some institutions expire third-party sessions aggressively as a security policy, so the connection dies on a short clock regardless of what Mezzi does.

We've raised TSP with our provider and there is no fix available. That work is tracked and currently blocked on the institution's side, so we'd rather tell you that than have you repair it a fifth time.

Important Notes

Your data isn't wrong, it's frozen. The last successful sync is still accurate as of its date. Net worth will drift from reality as time passes, not because the numbers are corrupted.

A loop on a normally reliable institution is worth reporting. If your account is with a large brokerage that usually works, a repeating prompt may be a routing or duplicate-record problem on our side rather than an institution limitation — those we can fix.

Repair returning you to the accounts page is normal. It's a known navigation quirk and doesn't mean the repair failed.

🗨 Still Need Help?

Email help@mezzi.com or text/call (415) 763-6997 with:

  • the institution name exactly as it appeared in search when you connected

  • the account name in Mezzi

  • how many times you've repaired it and over what period

  • a screenshot of the repair prompt and of any error the institution showed

  • the date the account last updated correctly

That's enough for us to check which provider your connection routes through and whether a different route is available.

Common Questions

  • Will repairing more times eventually fix it? No. If the first properly completed repair doesn't hold, additional attempts follow the same path and fail the same way. Report the institution instead.

  • Is the TSP problem going to be fixed? Not on a timeline we can promise. It's a limitation of what TSP allows third-party apps to do, and our data provider has raised it without a resolution. We'll update affected customers if that changes.

  • Can I choose a different provider for a looping account? Yes. You can check our Alternative Path article

  • If I add the account manually, do I lose the connected version? You'd need delete the connected account and add a manual one in its place to avoid double counting
