Removing an Institution vs. Removing a Single Account
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Overview
Delete institution removes the entire connection to that institution — and every account that came in through it, along with their history in Mezzi. Removing a single account affects only that one account and leaves the connection and your other accounts at that institution intact. If you're trying to clear up a duplicate or an account that never synced, the single-account route is almost always the one you want.
📌 What You Need to Know
What "Delete institution" does
It ends the connection itself. Every account Mezzi received through that institution disappears from your accounts list, and so does the holdings, transaction, and performance history Mezzi built for them. Mezzi stops receiving data from that institution entirely.
Use it when you genuinely want that institution out of Mezzi — you've closed the relationship, you connected the wrong login, or you're deliberately starting the connection over.
What removing a single account does
It removes one account from your view while leaving the institution connected. Your other accounts at that institution keep syncing normally. This is the right tool for a duplicate record, a closed account still showing a balance, or an account you'd rather not track.
Which one you probably want
Situation | Do this |
|---|---|
Two records for the same account | Remove the single duplicate account |
One account never synced, the rest are fine | Remove the single account |
Wrong login connected, nothing is right | Delete institution and reconnect |
You've closed the account at the institution | Remove the single account |
You want to stop tracking a bank altogether | Delete institution |
For the duplicate case specifically, follow How to Remove Duplicate Accounts in Mezzi — it walks through identifying which of the two records is the live one.
Duplicates are usually our bug, not something you did
This matters because it changes the fix. When we investigated a duplicate reported as "this account never synced," the cause was a duplicate record created by a race condition at connect time — not a problem at the brokerage and not a mistake by the customer. A scan found 22 duplicate pairs across 14 users, spanning all three of the aggregators we used, and we cleaned them up.
The practical consequence: reconnecting is usually not the fix. Support's own words on that case were that it's a duplicate record, nothing ever synced into it, and you don't need to reconnect anything. Deleting the institution and starting again costs you your history and can produce a fresh duplicate. Remove the empty record instead, or tell us and we'll clear it.
Important Notes
History doesn't come back. Reconnecting an institution after deleting it starts the account's history in Mezzi from that point. Balances and current holdings return; the performance record you'd built does not.
Removing an account in Mezzi doesn't touch the account itself. Nothing is closed, cancelled, or changed at your bank or brokerage — you're only removing it from Mezzi's view.
This is separate from deleting your Mezzi account. Removing an institution or an account has no effect on your Mezzi membership or your data as a whole.
🗨 Still Need Help?
If you're not sure which record to remove — or an account reappears after you remove it — email help@mezzi.com or text/call (415) 763-6997 with:
the institution name and the account names as they appear in Mezzi
a screenshot of the accounts list showing both records
which one shows a balance and which one appears empty or never synced
We can look at both records and tell you which is live before you remove anything.
Common Questions
If I delete an institution, do I lose all my accounts from that bank? Yes. Delete institution removes the connection and every account that came through it, along with their history in Mezzi.
Will deleting and reconnecting fix a duplicate account? Usually not. Duplicates are typically created by a fault on our side at connect time, so reconnecting can create another one while costing you your history.
Does removing an account from Mezzi close it at my bank? No. It only removes it from Mezzi. Your account at the institution is unaffected.
Can I get the history back if I remove something by mistake? Reconnecting restores current balances and holdings, but not the history Mezzi had recorded. Ask us before removing anything you're unsure about.
